What is a Dental Bridge
A dental bridge is a fixed dental restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth by literally “bridging” the gap between remaining teeth. The bridge consists of one or more artificial teeth, called pontics, anchored in place by crowns attached to the natural teeth or implants on either side of the gap, known as abutment teeth.
Types of Dental Bridges
- Traditional Bridge
In this type, crowns are placed on the abutment teeth on either side of the gap, with a pontic tooth in between. This is the most common type and is suitable if you have natural teeth on both sides of the gap. - Cantilever Bridge
This bridge only requires one abutment tooth, so it’s used when there is only one adjacent natural tooth next to the gap. It’s less common and usually only for areas with low biting force, like front teeth. - Maryland Bridge
Instead of crowns, this bridge uses metal or porcelain “wings” on each side of the pontic, which are bonded to the backs of the adjacent natural teeth. This type of bridge is more conservative, as it doesn’t require as much alteration of the adjacent teeth. - Implant-Supported Bridge
This bridge is supported by dental implants instead of natural teeth, making it an option when multiple teeth are missing.
